The design market was established by the National Design Centre in 2004 as a platform for designers to sell their products directly to the public. It also gives Melbournians the chance to see local designs and to meet designers face-to-face. 

With great music, design, coffee and food, the market has become a popular place to meet and exchange creative ideas. The market organisers only select the very best designs. This year features many new designers taking part for the first time.


"It is our sense that in spite of the extra choice now out there in terms of the design market concept that started with the MDM, this is an event that stallholders know is not an easy gig to get. In the current retail climate it is also an opportunity for added exposure without the big outlay for industry trade shows," says market manager, Elizabeth Collins.

The design market, with over 50 designer stalls, is held in the heart of Melbourne's CBD, in the subterranean-like carpark of Federation Square. “Having achieved a place at this venerable design event means that designers pull out all the stops with the products and experiences they offer,” says Collins.

Highlights for this year include Boots lighting designs, Bailey Nelson eyewear, delicate ceramics by Urban Cartel and hanging gardens by Glasshaus.

The market is open from 10am until 5pm on 2 December, and is a free event - not to be missed.
