Unikia’s new Compleat range of lunchboxes offer innovative and eco-friendly alternatives to many of the traditional, plastic varieties. The Foodbag, for instance, keeps your lunch fresh inside and then rolls up compactly once you’ve eaten it.
“We started developing new lunchbox solutions based on a frustration with the limited functionality of the existing lunchboxes. Norway is a proud lunchbox-using country, but we thought there was a huge potential for better lunchboxes,” says Tom Bovim, Head of Brands at Unikia, which was established just last year with the aim of developing high-quality, functional and aesthetically pleasing products.
The design and development process of the Compleat range began with identifying the challenges and issues of current lunchboxes, such as limited functionality, taking up too much space, food getting crushed inside and losing freshness. In contrast, Unikia wanted to create tailor-made solutions for all users’ needs: lunchboxes that were space efficient, containing protective compartments, solutions for freshness and with a great product design.
They then carried out research by looking at what it is companies are currently producing and also talking to end-users about their thoughts on lunchboxes. With these insight-driven ideas, the design team started sketching and from 100 concepts they whittled it down to just 10 products.
One of these is the Foodbag – a very practical and space-efficient alternative to the large, bulky lunchbox, with dimensions of 15 x 18 x 8.5cm. It works in three easy steps: place food inside, squeeze top, roll down as you would a traditional paper bag and secure with a belt. Once the lunch has been eaten, the Foodbag can be rolled down into a compact cylinder measuring just 4cm in diameter.
“The Foodbag is inspired by the traditional paper bags that many people used before, but we wanted this one to be reusable, washable and durable. It can be used to carry pasta, salad or leftovers so has a much better usability,” says Bovim.
Made of 100% food-grade silicone, it has unlimited reuse and is dishwasher safe. It is also strong with a solid bottom and sides to prevent the contents being squashed in transit.
Other innovative solutions in the Compleat range include: the Foodskin – a highly elastic silicone skin that holds a sandwich together and is completely flat when empty; and the Foodbook – an extremely slim lunchbox that can be easily slid into a computer bag without taking up much room.
