Braun has reported that the 2012 BraunPrize international design competition has attracted its highest level of entries ever with 2399 entrants from 73 countries.
2012 is the first year in which design professionals and design enthusiasts have been able to enter – almost 25% of entrants were from this group. The remainder were design student entrants.
After three intensive days of judging, the jury chair and Head of Design at Braun, Professor Oliver Grabes concluded, “The BraunPrize aim has always been to find and promote new design talent who would continue to challenge the norms and forge exciting design innovations. In 2012, with the inclusion of design professionals and enthusiasts from outside an academic context, we are not just nurturing talent, but also opening up the accessibility of design to more people around the world. The jury is energised by the remarkable growth and quality of submissions for this year’s BraunPrize and the real passion and vision demonstrated by all of the entrants to create exceptional solutions to everyday challenges.”
The increase in participation for the BraunPrize may be due to the extensive changes made to this year’s program. The theme of “Genius design for a better everyday” emphasises the importance of industrial design and the need for innovative well-designed products that improve the lives of people all over the world.
The 2012 BraunPrize also has a new Sustainability Award, recognising innovative sustainable solutions for everyday life; and has introduced National Awards – to acknowledge the talent of designers from their respective national design communities.
P&G (Braun's parent company) has also clearly supported Braun’s decision to raise the total prize money to US$100 000, communicating the importance of industrial design for Braun, and the entire P&G family of brands.
The global and national BraunPrize winners will be announced at the BraunPrize Ceremony on September 26 this year at Braun headquarters in Kronberg, Germany.
